Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure that aims to increase breast size and improve breast shape. By placing implants beneath the breast tissue or chest muscles, your plastic surgeon can help patients achieve a more proportionate, balanced, and attractive breast appearance.

This procedure is often covered by insurance.

Ideal Candidates for Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation may be suitable for women who are dissatisfied with the size or shape of their breasts, have asymmetrical breasts, or have lost breast volume due to weight loss, pregnancy, or aging. Ideal candidates should be in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and not be pregnant or breastfeeding.

The Steps of Breast Augmentation

Here’s what you can expect from Breast Augmentation. Each patient is unique, and we’ll discuss the particulars of your procedure during your consultation.

  1. Anesthesia
‍General anesthesia is administered for your comfort and safety during the procedure.
  2. Incision
‍The surgeon makes an incision in one of three locations
‍along the inframammary fold (the crease beneath the breast), around the areola (periareolar), or in the armpit (transaxillary). The choice of incision depends on factors such as implant type, size, and your personal preferences.
  3. Implant placement
‍The surgeon creates a pocket either behind the breast tissue (subglandular) or beneath the chest muscle (submuscular) to accommodate the implant. The choice of placement depends on factors such as your body type, implant type, and desired outcome.
  4. Implant insertion
‍The selected implants, either silicone or saline, are inserted into the created pockets and positioned for optimal shape and symmetry.
  5. Closing the incisions
‍The incisions are closed with sutures and a supportive bandage or surgical bra is applied to help support the breasts during healing.
  6. Recovery
‍You will be monitored in a recovery area until the anesthesia wears off, and then you can return home to rest. Patients typically feel well after this procedure and can quickly return to activities of daily living. Your surgeon will provide detailed post-operative care instructions, including wearing a supportive bra, managing discomfort, and scheduling follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.
