Oncoplastic breast reconstruction is a state-of-the-art surgical procedure that integrates plastic surgery techniques with breast cancer tumor removal. This approach combines a lumpectomy with a breast lift/reduction, resulting in a more natural and aesthetically pleasing outcome. The other breast can simultaneously be lifted/reduced to create a youthful, symmetric breast appearance.

This procedure is often covered by insurance.

Ideal Candidates for Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction

Oncoplastic breast reconstruction is suitable for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and require a lumpectomy or partial mastectomy. Qualification for this procedure requires the patient to be a good candidate for a lumpectomy (partial mastectomy) and that determination will be made by your breast surgeon. Patients with large breasts and ptotic (sagging) breasts typically see significant aesthetic improvements while undergoing this combination procedure.

The Steps of Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction

Here’s what you can expect from Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction. Each patient is unique, and we’ll discuss the particulars of your procedure during your consultation.

  1. Consultation
‍The patient meets with a plastic surgeon and oncologist to discuss their cancer treatment plan and reconstructive options. The surgeon will assess the patient's breast size, shape, and tumor location to determine the best approach for oncoplastic reconstruction.
  2. Tumor Removal
‍The oncologist will begin by removing the cancerous tumor and a margin of healthy tissue surrounding it. This process is known as a lumpectomy or partial mastectomy.
  3. Breast Reconstruction
‍Once the tumor is removed, the plastic surgeon will reshape and reconstruct the breast using the remaining healthy tissue.
  4. Symmetry Procedure
‍The surgeon may perform a reduction or lift on the opposite breast to ensure symmetry and balance.
  5. Closure
‍The incisions will be closed with sutures. The incisions are typically around the areola, extending vertically to the crease (inframammary fold), and along the fold.
