Botox, derived from botulinum toxin type A, is a cosmetic injectable that temporarily paralyzes targeted facial muscles to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The treatment is most commonly used on forehead lines, crow's feet, and frown lines between the eyebrows. Applications and dosages are bespoke to create a youthful and elegant, but still natural, appearance.

This procedure is often covered by insurance.

Ideal Candidates for Botox

Botox is suitable for adults who wish to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines caused by facial muscle activity. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not receive Botox treatments.

The Steps of Botox

Here’s what you can expect from Botox. Each patient is unique, and we’ll discuss the particulars of your procedure during your consultation.

  1. Consultation
‍The patient meets with a qualified provider to discuss their concerns, medical history, and desired outcomes. The provider will examine the patient's facial features and recommend a personalized treatment plan.
  2. Preparation
‍The treatment area is cleaned, and the provider may apply a topical anesthetic to minimize discomfort during the injections.
  3. Injection
‍Using a fine needle, the provider carefully injects Botox into the targeted facial muscles. The number of injections and the amount of Botox used will depend on the individual's needs and the areas being treated.
  4. Post-treatment
‍After the injections, the provider may gently massage the treated area to ensure even distribution of the product. Patients are advised to avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for at least 24 hours to prevent the spread of Botox to unintended muscles.
  5. Recovery
‍There is minimal downtime associated with Botox injections. Avoid activities that raise the heart rate for the remainder of the day to achieve maximal effect. Patients may rarely experience slight redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites. Results become noticeable within 3-7 days after the treatment and can last up to 3-6 months.
  6. Maintenance
‍To maintain the desired results, patients should schedule regular follow-up treatments every 3-6 months.

FAQs

Everything else you need to know about Botox.

Can the Botox be reversed?

While Botox is not reversible, Botox has a limited length of effect of 3-6 months and the functions of the underlying muscles will return with time. While still very uncommon, the most common problem is drooping of an eyelid which can be managed with eyedrops.

When will I see the results?

Botox takes time to work its magic. You should expect to see results by day 4 and expect the full effect by day 10. There is typically minimal bruising, swelling, or skin irritation resulting from the very small needle sticks required to administer Botox, any of which would resolve within a couple days.

What is Botox?

Botulinum toxin aka “Bo-tox” is a naturally occurring protein created by a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. Many years ago, botulinum toxin was well known as the cause of botulism–a whole body paralysis. Forward thinking physicians in the 1900s realized that they could harness the powers of botulinum toxin to selectively weaken targeted muscles and the uses have expanded ever since.

Will I look frozen?

My preferred aesthetic retains dynamic motion of the brow and smile. Botox can soften wrinkles and facial features without eliminating the natural movements that allow us to express ourselves. While it is not the default, we will tailor the treatment to your preferred aesthetic so please let me know if you want a frozen look.

How long does the effect last?

Botox effects last 3-6 months. There is a weakening of the muscle that can give the appearance of continued effect and may lessen the quantity you need over time.

I have a big event coming up! When should I schedule my Botox appointment?

For a facial optimization, come see me 6 weeks before your event. We will treat the areas of concern conservatively and reassess at a touch-up appointment 4 weeks before your event. You will have the full effect by your event and look your best.
