Abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat, as well as tightening the abdominal muscles. This procedure can help individuals who have experienced changes in their abdominal area due to pregnancy, significant weight loss, or the natural aging process.

This procedure is often covered by insurance.

Ideal Candidates for Abdominoplasty

Ideal candidates for abdominoplasty are individuals who are in good overall health, maintain a stable weight, and have realistic expectations about the procedure's outcome. This procedure is particularly beneficial for those with excess skin and fat in the abdominal area that does not respond to diet and exercise. Women who have experienced muscle and skin stretching during pregnancy can also benefit from a tummy tuck. It is important to note that abdominoplasty is not a substitute for weight loss or a healthy lifestyle.

The Steps of Abdominoplasty

Here’s what you can expect from Abdominoplasty. Each patient is unique, and we’ll discuss the particulars of your procedure during your consultation.

  1. Anesthesia
‍The patient is given general anesthesia to ensure comfort during the procedure.
  2. Incision
‍The surgeon makes a horizontal incision between the pubic hairline and the belly button. The length and shape of the incision depend on the amount of excess skin to be removed.
  3. Skin and fat removal
‍The skin is separated from the abdominal wall, and excess skin and fat are removed. The surgeon may also use liposuction to remove additional fat deposits.
  4. Muscle tightening
‍If necessary, the surgeon tightens the weakened or separated abdominal muscles by pulling them closer together and stitching them into place.
  5. Navel repositioning
‍The surgeon re-creates a belly button and positions it to ensure a natural appearance.
  6. Closing the incisions
‍The remaining skin is pulled down, and the incisions are closed using sutures.
  7. Recovery
‍After the procedure, the patient is taken to a recovery area for monitoring. Compression garments are applied to support the abdomen and minimize swelling. Patients typically return home the following day. Rest, compression, and lymphatic massage are crucial to maximizing the outcome.
