Liposuction, also known as "lipo," is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure that sculpts the body by removing undesirable fat from areas such as the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. This procedure can produce excellent results for patients with stubborn areas of fat that don't respond to diet and exercise. The liposuction procedure is the first step to achieving an ideal result but requires significant post-operative care to maximize the effect. Patients should expect to undergo routine lymphatic massages and wear compressive garments continuously post-operatively.
The best candidates for liposuction are adults within 30% of their ideal weight who have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone. Liposuction is best for removing localized fat deposits, rather than for significant weight loss or obesity treatment. A positive outlook and realistic expectations are important for a satisfactory outcome. Non-smokers who are in good general health and do not have any medical conditions that could impair healing are the most suitable candidates.

Liposuction is typically performed under general anesthesia, local anesthesia, or intravenous sedation, depending on the extent of the procedure and the patient's preferences. - Incisions
The surgeon makes small, inconspicuous incisions in the targeted areas. The number and location of these incisions depend on the amount and location of fat being removed. - Fat removal
The stubborn fat deposits are broken up and the excess fat is removed with suction. Meticulous care is taken to smooth the contours. - Closure
Once the desired amount of fat is removed, the incisions are closed with sutures and a compression garment is applied to the treated areas to minimize swelling and support the new body contours during healing. - Recovery
After the procedure, patients will experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Most patients can return to work within a few days, but should avoid strenuous activities for several weeks. Patients will need to get lymphatic massages in the immediate post-operative period and wear their compression garments continuously, except to shower.
