Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes or resizes the nose. It can be performed for cosmetic reasons, to improve breathing, or both. The procedure involves making incisions to access the bone and cartilage support system. These incisions are usually made across the columella and inside the nostrils to minimize visible scarring.

This procedure is often covered by insurance.

Ideal Candidates for Rhinoplasty

Qualified candidates have aesthetic or functional concerns with their nose, have completed facial growth (usually ages 15-16), and don’t smoke. A discussion with your surgeon as to your goals is crucial to ensure that your expectations can be met.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

  • ‍Improves the appearance of the nose, bringing it into better proportion with the rest of the face
  • ‍Corrects structural problems that cause breathing issues
  • ‍Boosts self-confidence and self-image
  • ‍Provides a permanent solution to cosmetic or functional concerns

The Steps of Rhinoplasty

Here’s what you can expect from Rhinoplasty. Each patient is unique, and we’ll discuss the particulars of your procedure during your consultation.

  1. Anesthesia
‍General anesthesia is administered for your comfort during the procedure.
  2. Incision
‍Incisions are made inside the nose and across the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils.
  3. Reshaping
‍The underlying structure of the nose is reshaped by reducing or augmenting nasal bones and cartilage.
  4. Correcting a deviated septum
‍If the septum is bent, it can be straightened to improve breathing.
  5. Closing the incision
‍Once the underlying structure is reconstructed to the desired shape, nasal skin and tissue are redraped and incisions are closed.
  6. Recovery
‍For the first few days, your nose and face will be swollen and you may experience bruising around the eyes. Nasal packing or splints will support the nose as it begins to heal. Most patients feel like themselves within two weeks and can resume most activities.
