The Steps of Spino-Plastic Surgery

Here’s what you can expect from Spino-Plastic Surgery. Each patient is unique, and we’ll discuss the particulars of your procedure during your consultation.

  1. Anesthesia
    ‍General anesthesia is administered for patient comfort.
  2. Spine Surgery
    ‍The spine surgeon accesses the spine in their typical fashion and performs the necessary steps for management of the patient’s condition.
  3. Spino-Plastic Surgery
    ‍Well vascularized tissue, typically the paraspinous muscles, latissimus muscles, and trapezius muscles, is elevated and transposed into the incision. These components are approximated with sutures to create an optimal healing environment. When necessary, vascularized bone or regional soft tissue flaps can also be mobilized to satisfy the medical indication. Drains are placed and the skin is meticulously reapproximated with sutures.
  4. After a hospital stay of 3-7 days, the patient can usually return home to continue recovery. Physical therapy is started to regain strength and mobility.
